Finding Magic in Kawaguchiko Before Climbing Mt. Fuji
Before my Mt. Fuji climb, I decided to make Kawaguchiko my base. I booked a guesthouse for four days, though, in reality, I only had one free afternoon to actually explore the town. Still, that short window turned out to be enough to remind me why I love traveling.
Where I Stayed
I checked into a cozy guesthouse in Kawaguchiko, HOSTEL MICHIKUSA-YA, which gave me the perfect access point not just to Mt. Fuji but also to the peaceful charm of the lakeside town. The vibe was quiet and laid-back, a perfect contrast to the intensity of preparing for a mountain climb.
Wandering by the Lake
On my first afternoon, I didn’t plan anything at all. Instead, I chose to walk aimlessly, hoping to stumble upon something unexpected maybe a hidden cafĂ© or a hole in the wall restaurant.
That little unplanned walk led me to one of the most magical spots I’ve ever seen. While strolling along the edge of Lake Kawaguchi, I found a campsite with these charming yellow boats lined up by the dock. Beyond them was a picture-perfect view of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
The timing couldn’t have been better. It had just rained heavily earlier in the day, so the air was crisp, cool, and unbelievably fresh. Standing there, watching the boats bob gently against the dock, I couldn’t help but pause and take it all in.
Sometimes, it’s moments like this that remind us why we go out into the world. It’s not always about the big bucketlist attractions or tightly packed itineraries. Sometimes, it’s about stumbling onto quiet little corners that make you stop, breathe, and simply appreciate the beauty around you.
Kawaguchiko gave me that moment. And before I even set foot on Mt. Fuji, I already felt like the journey was worth it.
