Travel Blog: The Digital Age of Travel (Why Everything Became So Complicated)

Living in the digital world, I can’t help to think why preparing for an upcoming travel became so complicated.

A few months back, thinking about  my soon-to-be adventure made me pushed all the stress I have been feeling at work away. Suddenly, everything was sweet and the world is perfect.

Now that my trip will be in a week time, I started to feel the stress (well, I think part of it started already when I was applying for my visa)…but that’s not the point of this blog. ^^

In today’s world, documenting one’s trip became a ‘must’ in every adventure that one is embarking. With the presence of different social media platforms, we feel responsible to share our experiences to the world—-and at time we over share (I am guilty of this!!)….I miss the time that all you need is a good book to accompany you (sort of).

Last week, I bought a Go Pro Hero 3+ thinking that I ‘need’ this in order to capture good videos, better than the ones I took using my camera phone. When I was assembling it, I felt like an old man. I was having a hard time figuring out what goes with what. To add to my ‘dumb moment list’ I even watched a youtube clip on how to open the box——Oh My!!

The sight of all the items inside a go pro box laid on my table was scary. Instead of being excited (as most of you for sure), I must admit that I panicked .

Now that I was able to figure out how it works, everything became cool and now I am back on being excited haha.

Ok, to go back to my point. The world truly changed in terms of traveling.  I remember the time that we only needed is one instamatic camera (we have a kodak back then) to capture great travel/family moments. Now, for my trip, I will be bringing an HD digital camera (canon G16), a Go Pro, my Samsung Note 8 tablet and my camera phone. With this list, I think I made progress because I will not bring any DSLR.

Aside from this, I went to an electronic shop and bought a 32 gb and 64 gb memory cards —oh I cant believe that they are very expensive, whew. Why do we need memory cards..why ..why …why!!

Well, I shouldn’t be ranting about this because by the end of the day, it is our choice if we’ll get zap into the digital travel world or we’ll just enjoy the view and keep it in our built-in human memory bank.

The beauty of living in the digital world it that, it is now very easy to share our experiences. With a click of a button people will be able to see what you are seeing, marvel at God’s creation and appreciate the beauty of the world we are living in.

As for me, I think we should find the balance of enjoying every place that we are visiting, capturing it in our hearts and share it to the people we love. This  for me the true essence of traveling.

The Traveling Journal Project: Mt. Kilimanjaro!!!!

Mt. Kilimanjaro!!!! One of my dream hike trip. When I got an update from our keeper that "#The Traveling Journal Project is now in Mt. Kilimanjaro" I got so excited!

Here’s the note from Ingvild:

"Endelig var det tid for vår største utfordring på denne fantastiske reisen gjennom verden! Denne historien vil ta dere til Afrikas tak og gir dere vår opplevelse av å bestige Kilimanjaro."

"Finally it was time for our biggest challenge on this amazing journey through the world! This story will take you to Africa’s roof and give you our experience of climbing Kilimanjaro.”

As I follow the journey of these two travelers, I can say that this one really was an amazing accomplishment. I can only imagine the excitement rushing through their veins as they stepped into Africa’s highest peak!

"Finally we were able to cheer loud! There was no doubt that we now found ourselves at Uhuru Peak, 5895 m Our dream of climbing Africa’s highest mountain was now become a reality. It was a very special feeling and we smiled from ear to ear when we took our well-earned victory picture with the whole gang. Because of the thin air, it was recommended not to stay there more than 10 minutes. We looked beyond the dry-covered landscape that will soon be covered by heavy snowfalls when the rainy season comes. Coping feeling was great, cheerful and happy, we reversed after having managed the journey greatest challenge.

Finally it was time for our biggest challenge on this amazing journey through the world! This story will take you to Africa’s roof and give you our experience of climbing Kilimanjaro.”

#TheTravelingJournalProject: GAME ON!

Most of you have known that Surat Journals recently launched a project called #TheTravelingJournalProject. It is where one journal is on a mission to travel the world (with the help enthusiastic travelers from all over the world).

Click this link for to read more about this project: #TheTravelingJournalProject

As the owner of Surat Journals I had the privilege to be the first keeper of The Traveling Journal. Being a self confessed travel junkie, I instantly thought of getting a photo of the journal in one of the most celebrated structures here in the UAE.

I already had a photo of the Burj Khalifa (see this link), so I decided to take a photo along the Burj Al Arab.

When the tallest tower in the world was not yet constructed, this 7 star hotel reigns supreme throughout the UAE (and in my opinion still is). With the inviting beach background, this is the perfect place to kick start our little journey.

After scribbling a bit of my thoughts on the journal to share to the rest of the future keepers, it is time for me to move on and pass it (believe it or not, it was a bit hard to give it to someone — I have a bit of an attachment issues).

I wrapped the journal and pass it to the next keeper —— all the way to the sunny CALIFORNIA! I sent it to The Hollywood Youth Hostel in Los Angeles hoping that it will arrive on time when the next keeper will check in.

After a few days of waiting (and hoping that it will not get lost), I received this photo in our Surat Journal FB page with this caption:

"Your Traveling Journal Project is ON!!!"

And so it is!

We have received more updates on where the journal has been traveling for the past weeks and all we can say is WOW! We will be giving more updates in this blog and also in our facebook page, instagram and twitter page.
