GREAT WALL OF CHINA: Jinshanling-Simatai Hike

I have been planning to update my blog about The Great Wall of China long time ago as there is nothing aside from photographs in my previous 'Multiply' site (a moment of silence for multiply.com).

Today, I was browsing Instagram and saw several photos of The Great Wall and it inspired to start a 'real' blog about my trip.

Beijing is very special to me. It was my very first solo trip. Before this time (2008), I haven't met any solo backpackers, so hearing stories in our dorm type hostel room from a 20-something yr. old Scottish guy who traveled from one country to another before reaching Beijing really caught my attention. It was something that was unheard of for me.

I stayed in Peking International Youth Hostel just beside the Forbidden City (how cool was that). In the hostel, they offered a tour/hike to the Great Wall of China. With this information I planned my itinerary around this, knowing that need to block a full day just for this trip.

Trekking with A Club Adventure Great Wall Trek

It was called the Great Jinshanling-Simatai Hike. And at the time that I signed in, I kind of didn't know how great this great hike will be. We gathered in the hostel lobby early in the morning (at around 8am) for our pick-up. Our minivan did a few more stops to nearby hostels to pick-up other hikers. We were around 12 all in all and our guide said that it was a good number.

At the assembly point, our guide made it clear to us that this hike is not easy, it will be very demanding and tiring but at the same time very rewarding. He said that there are other routes to climb and experience the wall. There are apparently buses which will bring you from one tower to another and also there is an option to ride a cable car. Although these are pretty easy routes, it is the most touristy options. The trek that we will take are far from the collection of tourists and we will be able to experience both the restored and the untouched areas---hence the tag 'GREAT

The Jinshanling Hike Route

Although we were aware of the challenges ahead, we started walking up the stairs of the Great Wall with 'GREAT ENTHUSIASM'.

[blockquote source="travelchinaguide.com"]The Great Wall was originally built in the Spring and Autumn, and Warring States Periods as a defensive fortification by the three states: Yan, Zhao and Qin. It went through constant extensions and repairs in later dynasties. It began as independent walls for different states when it was first built, and did not become the "Great" wall until the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Qin Shihuang succeeded in his effort to have the walls joined together to fend off the invasions from the Huns in the north. Since then, the Wall has served as a monument of the Chinese nation throughout history.[/blockquote]

Knowing the history of the Great Wall I was overwhelmed the moment I first stepped on it. This has been standing for centuries and became a witness of a number of victories, deaths and defeats. I can just imagine the time when it was being constructed. They said aside from war, people died building the wall that's supposed to save them.

Getting Ready for the Hike

The Great Wall at Jinshanling is one of the best preserved parts of the wall with many original features still intact. It is a remote and relatively isolated section of the Great Wall and has not been repaired since 1570

Being one of the remotest sections of the wall, it was really a delight for our group to explore every bits and parts of it. I made this trek pre-selfie craze (and pre GoPro), I can just imagine how it would have been if we already have the gadgets that we are using today.

I brought my iPod (it was helpful) which gave a bit of a musical score in every step that I took and also my old Nokia phone which I don't know the reason why I had it.

Brought My Classic Ipod ---yeah IPOD

and YES..NOKIA!

I love that although we have a guide, we can freely take our time in walking. With the scenic views surrounding us (literally from everywhere), we surely need to take all in and don't want to miss anything.

After a few kilometers, exhaustion kicked in. It was summer in China that time and we were hiking at the top of the wall at noon (I think you can already imagine that). But meeting new friends and supporting one another was another aspect that this trip became very memorable.

image

Moving forward, climbing 100 step stairs to reach towers after towers, I started to get a glimpse of how huge the wall is. Although debunked, there was a time when everyone thought that you can see the Great Wall of China from the moon.

When our guide told us that what we were seeing on one side is Mongolia, it felt so surreal. You can hear a lot of ooooos and wows whenever we would pass a tower and see what is awaiting for us on the next segment of the trip.

[blockquote source="chinatravel.com"]There are three special features that sets Simatai Great Wall apart, and which surely contributed to the UNESCO decision to recognize this section of the Great Wall as a unique cultural heritage: it incorporates special style elements from the numerous other sections of the Great Wall; it has preserved, for the most part, its original Ming period refortification (this is the original work commissioned by General Qi Jiguang), both of which features make the Simatai section a uniquely representative section of the Ming period Great Wall); and the military crews that conducted the work commissioned by General Qi left their mark on the wall, quite literally, in the form of stamps that identified the individual military unit..[/blockquote]

Aside from the Jinshanling, we also climbed the Simatai section of the Great Wall of China. As mentioned at the beginning of the blog, I took this trip last 2008 and I was fortunate to experience the full hike of the Simatai Great Wall. Since 2010, it was announced that the Simatai trail will be closed for restoration and now only the west section of the wall is open for the public. Compared to the Jinshanling, Simatai has narrower and steeper trails. In 1987, it was acknowledged by UNESCO as one the World Heritage Sites, something I was excited about when I heard that (my University thesis was about Heritage Conservation ^^).

It is one of the narrowest trail of the Great Wall

After climbing around 30 watchtowers on a zigzag rough trail and almost 6 hours of hike, I was not sure if I will be excited to know that we will start our way down the wall. First, it meant that we finished exploring and it's time to say bye, and second, I think I can't walk anymore further, even if gravity will help.

But to our surprise, if we spent 6 hours hiking up, we will only spend 6 minutes going down----------BY A ZIP LINE! (and it is known as one of the must-try zip lines in the world).

It was an awesome trip and for sure I will tell my grandchildren that I was able to climb 'That Famous Wall'. And to cap the whole trip, I got a medal proving that I have survived the whole hike (I paid for it, but well, I can still use it to brag).

Do you want to know how to make this trip happen? Watch this space, I will share information on HOW TO MAKE THIS TRIP HAPPEN soon.

Event Blog: Noon Art Boutique Hotel Apartments and Gallery Launching

Last February 10, I was privileged to be invited to the launching (ribbon cutting) event of a new boutique hotel in Al Barsha, Dubai. The boutique hotel is an ‘art’ inspired hotel apartment, the first of its kind in Dubai.

During my travels, I have seen a lot of boutique hotels, hostels and B&Bs with their dash of artistic touches. So, when I was researching about Noon Art Boutique Hotel Apartments and Gallery, I was really excited. I think it is time for Dubai to invest in such hotels, as tourism booms in this region.

image

image

Noon Boutique Hotel Apartments and Gallery, showcases works and visions from 3 Arabic artists, Dr. Najat Meky (Emirati), Mr. Ali Hassan (Qatari) and Mr. Khaled Ben Simane  (Tunisian). All 45 apartments in the hotel were divided among the 3 artists to design and create.

image

Situated just a walk away from The Mall of The Emirates, I easily found the boutique hotel (of course I asked around and the map provided really helped).

The launching event was pretty much very interesting. There were a lot of press and yes, bloggers who were invited. We gathered in the lobby and marveled at artists in action and creating masterpieces in an instant.

After a few minutes, we were all ushered in groups to have a tour of the hotel. Each artist’s creations can be seen in the room’s lighting design, dining tables, fabrics, cupboard doors, hanging artwork pieces and even the designs of the head boards.

One particular artist, Mr. Khaled Ben Simane infused the four elements of nature in his designs, according to our guide, he assigned air for the windows, fire for the kitchen, earth for the rug and water for the bathroom.

(here are headboards from the different rooms designed by the 3 featured artists)

Another interesting part of the hotel is their art gallery, I like that Noon pushes in promoting arts in the region. The gallery caters to veteran artists and even those who are still starting to create their mark.

image

It was a nice final stop for our tour, I was able to meet some bloggers and discussed (blogging) stuff. I always love to hear how bloggers came into creating their own blogs and other things under the sun. My friend from www.Bloggersinthecity.com, Rachel (stuffbyrhey) and I enjoyed munching on the canapes as well (I always love this part of every event).

image

As someone who is a designer and an artist. I truly appreciate the concept of this hotel. Although, I must say, some people will like the design of the room while others will not, but the fact is you can surely find artistry in each room. I would have loved to see  how the artist can transform the whole room and not be limited to curtains, fabrics, lighting and head boards, that will be very interesting for sure (maybe in their future developments).

Now we are done with the tour, the true test will be the customer service. I haven’t tried it yet but I will update this blog after spending a night or two here in the future.

You can check out Noon Art Boutique Hotel Apartments and Gallery’s website in www.noonhotel.com and their facebook page in this link.

Have you visited this hotel? Share with us your experience! ^^

Travel Blog: I LOVE SAN FRANCISCO!!! An Intro to the City!

After Orlando, I jumped westward and flew via Delta to San Francisco! Yey.

Although it was sad to leave my newly found friends from Florida, I must say, I was really excited to come to San Francisco. Here, I will be meeting 2 of my long time friends whom I haven’t seen after our graduation (year will not be mentioned).

We have been exchanging emails for months just to polish our itinerary. (I will be posting our itinerary spreadsheet in my next SF post.)

From the scorching sun of Florida, I was welcomed by a chilling breeze of San Francisco. I wasn’t prepared for this, I was advised that it will be cold, but not freezing.

image

After arriving from the airport, my friends Clarie and DF picked me up. Df came from Virginia and she arrived a few hours earlier than me.

They already ate at a nearby Filipino restaurant and they had a ‘sisig’ takeaway for me. YEY.

Our friend Clarie lives in Bay Point California which a bit of a ride from San Francisco, so we thought of using this time to explore a bit of San Francisco before crashing in to her house.

I love San Francisco, did I already mentioned that this is so far my favorite US city? The architecture is beautiful. If New York gave me the architectural wonders, San Francisco provided the panache that I’ve been searching for. They are not overwhelming like here in Dubai, just the right amount of flare and beauty.

The winding and sloping streets of San Francisco gave me a bit of a scare though, you really need a strong break pads to survive driving in this city.

Our first tourist destination stop was the famous Coit Tower. This tower offers a great 360 view of the city and the bay. You can see the famous Golden Gate Bridge and The Bay Bridge from here.

The line was a bit slow moving because we were only served with one (very vintage) elevator. Once, you made it to the top, you will really enjoy the view.

It was nice that this was our first stop. We got a full view of our playground for the next few days.

We also took this time to visit another famous attraction here in San Francisco. The Victorian Houses! We went to the Alamo Square. Our  initial goal was to look for the house in the TV show ‘Charmed’ but with no luck,we found ourselves standing in front of a more worthy site, the famous, Painted Ladies, or sometimes called as the Six Sisters.

According to http://www.aviewoncities.com

"For Americans over 30, these magnificent Victorian homes are easily recognizable from the opening moments of the 1990s sitcom, Full House. For other visitors, however, they are simply recognized as exquisite homes painted in colorful hues, incredibly well-preserved and a joy to view. You can find the homes facing the park on Steiner Street."

They are indeed exquisite and beautiful. Aside from these, residential architecture in San Francisco in general represents the thriving art scene of this magnificent city.

Our last stop before we head home and rest, was the world famous crooked road ( Lombard Street). It’s amazing how a street can packed a lot of tourist taking photos of cars trying their luck in maneuvering their way out of this road (needless to say that the traffic here is terrible).

All in all our introduction to this artistic city was very promising. I am excited to share where we’ve been and things we’ve discovered. I spent almost 4 days in San Francisco and I can’t wait to go back and explore the city more.

Yes I Am A Blogger! Blogger 101: Business Cards

Tonight I got an invite (as a blogger) to an event. YEY! So, to prepare for the event, with the help of my blogger friends from www.bloggersinthecity.com, they advised me (us) to bring some blogger business cards in case someone asked for it, or to give away to other bloggers/PR or simply to network with fellow guests.

I created mine, using the same logo I have in this blog. I want it simple with a stamp of #The Traveling Journal Project logo at the back.

All set for tonight! Will be blogging about this event soon.

Our Future Ancestral Home! All For My Beautiful Lola

There is a saying in our field (architecture), that the worst client you’ll ever encounter is your family. Well, I surely had a taste of that.

Clients in general are a bit of a handful, but when they are family, there is a bigger push. Creating a design for my grandma’s house that can fit the whole ‘Bonuan’ clan (if we thought of going for a vacation at once) was a bit stressful, with my full time job, my business and activities on the side, it was hard to have it squeezed in from the beginning.

The beauty about this project though, is that I know that I am doing it for the person (people) I love. In fact, the enthusiasm of the whole family was contagious, and to see them happy makes me happy also (naks!).

This house is a project of the whole clan, we decided to buy the lots around our ancestral house and build a huge house that can fit all of us. Most of us are outside the Philippines and we though it will be nice to have a place to stay whenever we thought of going back for a vacation.

Also, my lola (grandma) being the queen of the family (hihi) can’t stay in a small shack, it should fit such royalty.

image

With three architects in the family, we have came up with a good plan (basically it was really my uncle who did all the work, he is really good). With inputs coming from my aunts in Canada and Australia, I think we managed to achieve our dream ancestral house.

I am excited for this project to be finished and see everyone again back in the Philippines.

I have finished a draft of the exterior, and I must say, I am liking it!

image

Next stop, I will do a design for the interiors. I’ll post them soon…first I need to find a day to squeeze it! ^^

Bloggers In The City: Our First Bloggers Night!

Growing up, I never thought that I will become a blogger, I hate writing and English, not being my mother tongue made it very challenging. I am not one of those people who are confident with their grammar and word play, but I love to tell stories and my imagination is a bit playful.  During college, amazingly and I must say very controversial, I got good scores with my essays (naks)!

Then I started blogging!…………

I love putting my thoughts into words and I realized then I don’t need to be afraid of it, just narrate it the way I am conversing with a friend (yes you!).  I got fond of blogging, first it was in multiply, then I created a  Tumblr account and in the near future, I am planning to self host a blog which will be www.TheTravelingJournalProject.com (not live yet).

With this new love for blogging that I found, I got a chance to meet amazing people in the blogsphere, and last Saturday I met some amazing bloggers over dinner at Expiatriatewife’s  beautiful house.

I got very anxious on how this night will turn out. I can say that I am a very sociable guy but deep inside there is this shy guy who just wants to be alone….and blog my thoughts out.

We were asked to bring food from our native countries. Along with other Filipino bloggers we chipped-in and brought kare kare, relyenong bangus and leche flan. Others brought some sweets (sago from Malaysia), brownies, cream puffs and some vegetables with dips……oooh I almost forgot the wine and cheese which I think I got a handful of serving.

Our feast for the night!!!

It was fun to hear stories of every blogger who participated…Most of us have the same struggles and fears (I am talking about computer stuff here), like HTML, CSS Coding, SEO..Adverts..these are things that are (and still) very daunting to most of us. Good thing Mitziemee (aka superwoman) was there to help us understand some of these.

Other stuff we discussed was how  we manage our time when we blog, some issues and ethics when it comes to sponsored blogs…and the most controversial one: “Does your husband/wife support your blog?”…juicy!

image

Good laughs and a supportive blogger group. I think I will get use to this. ^^.  I am very much excited on what’s ahead for us in the future. Dubai blogger scene is really getting a lot of attention for the past year, 2014 will be awesome for sure…..PARTY!!!!!!
