My Dubai Blog: Beach Canteen, The Dubai Food Festival

image

Last week, I was invited to attend the grand launch of The Beach Canteen in Kite Beach. This project is part of The Dubai Food Festival which will run for 10 days starting last 27th of February.

At first, I thought I will not be able to make it to the event cause I will be leaving work at around 7pm and the event will run from 5pm to 8pm. I decided to try to catch up, at least to see the full set-up of these pop up food stalls.

I have made a few concepts based on refurbished cargo container before and it will be interesting to see how this was implements.

I love how Dubai is now exploring different avenues which can cater to a diverse set of people. This particular venue will surely attract those beach bums and hungry tourists ready to grab a quick bite and also those who just want to chill and enjoy the Dubai Sunset.

Bloggers In The City: Our First Bloggers Night!

Growing up, I never thought that I will become a blogger, I hate writing and English, not being my mother tongue made it very challenging. I am not one of those people who are confident with their grammar and word play, but I love to tell stories and my imagination is a bit playful.  During college, amazingly and I must say very controversial, I got good scores with my essays (naks)!

Then I started blogging!…………

I love putting my thoughts into words and I realized then I don’t need to be afraid of it, just narrate it the way I am conversing with a friend (yes you!).  I got fond of blogging, first it was in multiply, then I created a  Tumblr account and in the near future, I am planning to self host a blog which will be www.TheTravelingJournalProject.com (not live yet).

With this new love for blogging that I found, I got a chance to meet amazing people in the blogsphere, and last Saturday I met some amazing bloggers over dinner at Expiatriatewife’s  beautiful house.

I got very anxious on how this night will turn out. I can say that I am a very sociable guy but deep inside there is this shy guy who just wants to be alone….and blog my thoughts out.

We were asked to bring food from our native countries. Along with other Filipino bloggers we chipped-in and brought kare kare, relyenong bangus and leche flan. Others brought some sweets (sago from Malaysia), brownies, cream puffs and some vegetables with dips……oooh I almost forgot the wine and cheese which I think I got a handful of serving.

Our feast for the night!!!

It was fun to hear stories of every blogger who participated…Most of us have the same struggles and fears (I am talking about computer stuff here), like HTML, CSS Coding, SEO..Adverts..these are things that are (and still) very daunting to most of us. Good thing Mitziemee (aka superwoman) was there to help us understand some of these.

Other stuff we discussed was how  we manage our time when we blog, some issues and ethics when it comes to sponsored blogs…and the most controversial one: “Does your husband/wife support your blog?”…juicy!

image

Good laughs and a supportive blogger group. I think I will get use to this. ^^.  I am very much excited on what’s ahead for us in the future. Dubai blogger scene is really getting a lot of attention for the past year, 2014 will be awesome for sure…..PARTY!!!!!!

Broadway Here I Come!

image

I can say that what I was most excited of about our trip in NYC was visiting BROADWAY! I’ve been dreaming of walking along the street of Broadway and feel overwhelmed by the parade of theater acts being shown at every corner.

Being a musical theater lover, I was tasked to choose which show to watch. It was actually a no brainer, the obvious choices are always between Wicked or The Lion King, but I have seen both and one of my friends watched Wicked already (and one of them is planning to watch it this December at the West End).

I checked my “Musical Bucket List” and I narrowed down my choices into these (considering my friends of course): It will either be ONCE, Matilda or Pippin. Musicals like Kinky Boots and The Book of Mormons although these are really good (won the Tony’s and all) but these are too much “out there” for them.

After a little ‘here and there’ we have all decided that we will be going for ONCE. Yey, I’ve been wanting to watch this ever since I heard that they are doing a musical theater adaptation of the movie.

We got a tip that if we want to get up to 50% off from our tickets, which normally costs $150 we should try to buy it in the TKTS booth. You can buy discounted tickets if you will get a same day show, compared to buying tickets online or in the box office. Buying tickets in TKTS have some risk though, that is why they are asking you to prepare a tleast 2 shows in mind, a show you want to watch and an alternative (in case it is already full). It is located at the heart of Times Square, although the lines are very long it is moving fast.

We have decided to go in this route. Me and my friend Zheena was task to do the leg work for this. We had a boo boo moment but in the end we were able to get tickets with a 30% off from it’s original price! (Perfect)

Lining up, I felt like someone who’s going to see his crush in school. I can’t contain my excitement! I WILL BE WATCHING A BROADWAY MUSICAL IN BROADWAY!!! (faint)

image

The casts headed by Arthur Darvill and Joanna Christie were superb! It was a totally different kind of musical. I love that the full set up of the show involved the audience. If you are thinking of watching this, be sure to arrive atleast 15-20min earlier as the casts are jamming up already while the audience were invited to go on the stage and order some drinks (a real operational bar on stage!).

The show was touching accompanied by a number of heart felt songs. ‘Falling Slowly’ never fails to put a tear on my eye. The night ended with a full standing ovation and the theater was embraced by loud a  applause and shout from musical fans and accidental audiences.

I am happy with my first Broadway experience. I am claiming that I will have more of this coming soon!

Event Blog: Design Days --> My Eye Candy

Last March I had a privilege to be invited to the opening night of Design Days Dubai (see link here). This really kicked my inspiration+ creative bone to a high.

With all the furniture (and art pieces) exhibited it feels like I am in what one part of my heaven map.

Compared to last year’s exhibition, this year focused on a more contemporary approach, which is not a bad thing (I just missed seeing some very expensive vintage pieces).

This is a very interesting design for a clock..this is called “clock clock” designed by Humans Since 1982 and currated by Victor Hunt. This unique approach for time management really got my attention. These are actually series of clocks placed together to create a bigger clock. I still cant grasp how this is working.

image

Another interesting piece is “Jari” by Jihoon Ha. This is a modular, repetitive sculptural piece that works brilliantly as a seat. Perfect I must say!

image

I also love this stringed art display. This are actual scaled furniture outlines stringed from the ceiling. Although you cannot really seat on them but they are brilliantly installed to create a real 3d sketch.

image

I cant help to watch how they are producing pearl (a bit brutal I must say—-poor oyster)

image

After seeing their work, I instantly became their number 1 fan. I want to ruin their partnership and turn it into trio! Studio Swine made my vision possible. What they are actually doing is what was planning to do after working here in Dubai and manage my own design studio. To know more about them visit their website here.

All in all my eyes were satisfied with the buffet of creativity displayed—and of course, I do have some favorite pieces..cant wait for next year’s event!

My Dubai Splash Fashion League: A Splash of Fashion.

I posted a poster before about Splash’s fashion show with a running title “Splash Fashion League (see this link). It was indeed a very fashionable event full of a very edgy and sporty spring/ summer collection.

Me and my photographer friend Zheena were invited to gazed this event and have a look at their new collections.

The good thing about Splash is that their stuff are not expensive (will fit everyone’s budget), all you have to do is to be creative and and have a bit of imagination, which is what this fashion show is all about——CREATIVE FASHION.
